Planet Trade Shows
AMERICAN GEOPHYSICAL UNION (AGU) 2023
Planet data is being used in hundreds of scientific papers a year, in all number of fields. For the large AGU show, my design highlights just some of these use cases, in an eye-catching way meant to start conversations with passersby. Challenges included balancing line lengths and finding a Planet image among thousands that was of sufficient resolution, high enough contrast to support the logo, and was an immediate stand-in for “climate.” It was a big hit, with several attendees and a representative from Freeman saying this was their favorite booth of the show.
GEOINT 2004
Governmental defense and intelligence is one of Planet’s most important markets, and GEOINT is one of the biggest shows of the year with this audience. Planet doesn’t generally go for big booth presences like this, but this time it was worth it. The images high up wrap front side to end, and relate to the high-contrast messaging.
While demo stations run along one wall, the federal team decided the other wall could include storytelling that a salesperson could walk a show attendee through. From vessel detection to marine domain awareness, there are many Planet defense and intelligence stories to be told in the South China Sea area. Over a terrific map I worked closely with the data visualization team to create, I gridded the stories in careful alignment.
Planet EVENTS
PLANET IGNITE | WATERMAN PIN MAP
For the Planet Sales Kickoff event (Planet Ignite) the team wanted a pin map where the sales team could pin their locations to show what a global team they are. As a satellite company that shows accurate images of the globe, I was firmly against having this be a Mercator or other distorted projection. After a little research, I pitched the Waterman butterfly projection. Highly accurate, visually lovely, with cutouts perfect for “superstars” that could relate to sales team regions, I convinced the doubtful event lead. I wrote and designed the fun sign that accompanied it with the pins. Several salespeople told me after the show how delighted they were by it.
PLANET IGNITE | CLOSING “ANTHEM” VIDEO (STILLS)
The theme of Planet Ignite was “We’ve Got This,” so I wrote a closing dynamic-typography video that set the stage and then ended with an anthem of “We’ve got” phrases, ending with a massive “We’ve. Got. This.” To help it be exciting and on-budget, I gave the videographers not just the scipt, but very clear storyboarded direction and the animated typeface to make the job easier for them. As the final video has some internal-only messaing, this is a few stills.
PLANET EXPLORE | LOTS OF DELIVERABLES
Planet’s almost-yearly conference, Planet Explore, involved hundreds of digital and physical deliverables. We made a flexible look and feel, with a consistent color scheme and a few different coordinating graphical layout elements. Then, in one giant Adobe XD file, I built out scores of social ads, email banners, one-sheets. I also made wayfinding and branding signage, expo booths, swag, awards, and dozens of slide decks on a event branded template. By using the event branding kit of parts, we were able to make a coordinating set of assets that did not feel too repetitive or go stale.
PLANET ON THE ROAD
Instead of a large event like Explore, Planet decided to do three one-day regional events in 2024. I was placed in charge of project managing and designing all the creative for these events. The look and feel intentionally was a evolution of Explore’s, in the hopes that previous communications about Explore might be remembered by people seeing emails and social posts about On the Road.
For the logo, we wanted to get away from the literal reading of ground transport, so I went with an orbit turning into an up-and-to-the-right “to the stars” arrow. It works nicely with the brand and cities as a button.
PLANET ON THE ROAD | LANDING & REGISTRATION PAGES
For the landing pages for the Planet On the Road events, I laid out the page with an animated header of networking and three cards for the events; once registration was open for an event, that would be a primary call to action button. The registration sites above the fold have a countdown, event info and the registration form.
